Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Bora was arrested on Monday after the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell recovered nearly Rs 2 crore in cash and jewellery from her residences in Guwahati and Barpeta.
Officials recovered Rs 92 lakh in cash and jewellery worth about Rs 1 crore from her Guwahati residence, and an additional Rs 10 lakh in cash from her rented house in Barpeta.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that Bora had been under surveillance for six months over alleged involvement in contentious land matters. The case remains under investigation.
Who Is Nupur Bora?
Born on March 31, 1989, and hailing from Assam’s Golaghat district, Nupur Bora joined the Assam Civil Service in 2019. She studied English Literature at Gauhati University and previously attended Cotton College.
Before entering government service, she worked as a lecturer at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), according to her Facebook profile.

Bora began her administrative career as Assistant Commissioner in Karbi Anglong in March 2019, serving there until June 2023. She was later posted as Circle Officer in Barpeta before being transferred to Kamrup, where she was serving at the time of her arrest.
Allegations of Illicit Wealth
Investigators allege that during her six years of government service, Bora accumulated substantial wealth, property, and cash holdings far beyond what her salary would justify.
The Vigilance Cell also raided the residence of her alleged aide, Lat Mandal Surajit Deka, an employee at the Revenue Circle Office in Barpeta. Deka is accused of buying several land properties in Barpeta with Bora’s help during her posting as Circle Officer.
