Telugu actor Allu Arjun has been arrested in connection with the stampede outside a Hyderabad theatre last week, which tragically resulted in the death of a woman. Shortly after his arrest, Arjun filed a petition seeking to delay the process until Monday. The court hearing is scheduled for 4 PM.
The actor was taken from his Jubilee Hills residence to the Chikkadpally Police Station. His father, renowned filmmaker Allu Arvind, and other family members were present during the arrest. Arjun has alleged that police entered his bedroom during the arrest.
Legal Context
Hyderabad Police had previously registered a case against the 41-year-old actor, his security team, and the management of Sandhya Theatre. Charges include culpable homicide not amounting to murder and voluntarily causing hurt. On December 11, Arjun moved the Telangana High Court, seeking to quash the case.
The stampede occurred during an unplanned appearance by Arjun at a theatre screening his new film, Pushpa 2: The Rule. A 35-year-old woman named Revathi died, and her nine-year-old son was injured in the chaos as fans jostled for a glimpse of the star. According to Hyderabad Police Commissioner CV Anand, the theatre management and Arjun’s team did not inform authorities about the visit, and no separate entry or exit was arranged.

Police reports indicate that Arjun arrived at the theatre around 9:30 PM, using the main entrance and spending 15-20 minutes outside. As news of his arrival spread, the crowd swelled, leading to chaos when his security team attempted to manage the gathering. Revathi and her son reportedly felt suffocated in the crowd. Despite police intervention, the situation escalated, and the mother and son were taken to a hospital, where Revathi was declared dead.
Public and Political Reactions
The arrest has drawn sharp criticism from political leaders. BRS leader KT Rama Rao condemned the action, stating, “Treating Allu Arjun garu as a common criminal is uncalled for, especially for something he isn’t directly responsible for. There is always space for respect and dignified conduct.” He accused the government of overreach and questioned their priorities.
Allu Arjun’s Response
Arjun expressed his grief on social media, writing, “Deeply heartbroken by the tragic incident… My heartfelt condolences go out to the grieving family during this unimaginably difficult time. I will meet the family personally.” The actor also announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for the deceased woman’s family and pledged to cover medical expenses for her injured son.
