Senior Iranian leader Ali Larijani has been killed in Israeli airstrikes, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
The development comes amid a rapidly unfolding leadership crisis in Iran, following the earlier killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
`
Larijani, who served as secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, had emerged as one of the most influential figures in Tehran after Khamenei’s death.
With uncertainty surrounding Mojtaba Khamenei—who is reportedly seriously injured—Larijani was widely seen as a central figure helping steer Iran’s response alongside the interim leadership council.
His death significantly weakens the country’s already strained command structure.
Strikes Continue to Target Top Iranian Leadership
The killing of Larijani follows a series of Israeli strikes targeting senior Iranian officials and military commanders.
Another top commander, Gholamreza Soleimani, was also reported killed in airstrikes on Monday night.
These developments suggest a sustained campaign aimed at dismantling Iran’s leadership network amid the widening regional conflict.
Larijani’s Final Public Appearance
Larijani was last seen in Tehran on March 13 during a public rally alongside Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Earlier that day, the United States had announced a reward of up to $10 million for information on senior Iranian officials, including Larijani.
Shortly before his reported death, Larijani had warned of a “conspiracy” involving figures linked to Jeffrey Epstein, alleging a potential plot to stage a 9/11-style incident to frame Iran.
A Veteran of Iran’s Political System
Known for his pragmatic and measured approach, Larijani held several key positions during his career.
He previously served as Iran’s Speaker of Parliament and played a leading role in nuclear negotiations with the United States. He was also considered a close aide to Khamenei and a trusted figure within the regime.
Following the outbreak of hostilities, Larijani had warned the United States and Israel of an “unforgettable lesson,” signalling Tehran’s hardening stance.
Escalating Crisis in Iran
The killing of Larijani marks another blow to Iran’s leadership at a time of intense military pressure and internal uncertainty.
With multiple senior figures eliminated and the succession process still in flux, the country faces one of the most volatile periods in its recent history.
The situation continues to evolve rapidly as regional tensions show no sign of easing.
