In a dramatic turn in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, the family of Sonam Raghuvanshi has disowned her, with her brother Govind stating that if she is guilty, she must be hanged. The emotional fallout unfolded as Govind visited the home of Raja Raghuvanshi — Sonam’s slain husband — in Indore on Wednesday, where he broke down in tears while consoling Raja’s grieving mother, Uma Raghuvanshi.
Sonam, 24, is accused of orchestrating the murder of her husband, Raja, 29, during their honeymoon in Meghalaya on May 23, just 12 days after their wedding. The police allege that she was in a relationship with Raj Kushwaha, a 21-year-old employee in their family’s plywood business, and together they plotted the murder with the help of three of Kushwaha’s friends.
“I Gave My Sister to This Family and I Am a Part of It Now”
Govind, addressing the media alongside Raja’s brother Vipin, said: “It is not confirmed that Sonam was behind the murder. But the evidence being brought to light makes me 100% sure that she has got this done. The names of the other people that have come to light are all related to Raj Kushwaha.”
He added, “I have apologised to Raja’s family. I gave my sister to this family and I am a part of it now. My family has severed all ties with Sonam. I liked Raja. If Sonam is guilty, she must be hanged.”
Govind also shared details that raise further questions about the relationship between Sonam and Kushwaha. He revealed that Sonam used to tie a rakhi to Raj Kushwaha every year for the past three years. “He used to call her ‘didi’ and would tie rakhi along with me. That’s why no one suspected anything,” Govind said.

First Phone Call After Murder, Emotional Breakthrough
After remaining missing for days following the murder, Sonam was located at a dhaba in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur on Monday. She reportedly called Govind from there. “At that time, she was just crying and told me she was at the dhaba. I called the police and asked them to go there,” said Govind.
He reaffirmed his support for Raja’s family, stating that his lawyer would fight on their behalf. “If, like the police are saying, Sonam has confessed to this crime, then she is guilty,” he said.
Govind dismissed speculation that Sonam had resisted the marriage or warned her mother beforehand. “She was happy after the engagement. She shopped for two months before the wedding. We have boycotted Sonam and society will too.”

Govind also offered an apology to the Meghalaya government, clarifying earlier remarks made about the police investigation.
“Govind Is Not at Fault,” Says Raja’s Mother
Raja’s mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, expressed compassion for Govind despite her grief. “Govind told me he wants Sonam to be hanged. He is unhappy about what happened to Raja. He is not at fault,” she told reporters.
The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi and the subsequent revelations have sent shockwaves through both families and the broader Indore community, as calls grow louder for justice to be served swiftly and fairly.
