Karnataka woman poisons family | Even as the country grapples to come out of the shocking Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, a shocking case of attempted murder has emerged from Karnataka’s Hassan district. A 33-year-old woman, Chaitra, was arrested for allegedly trying to kill her husband, children, and in-laws by lacing their food with sleeping pills. The motive, according to police, was to keep her extramarital affair hidden.
Chaitra, married to Gajendra from Belur taluk for 11 years and a mother of two sons, had reportedly started mixing sleeping pills into the family’s meals with the help of her lover, Shivu. Gajendra became suspicious and eventually uncovered the poisoning attempt and alerted the Belur police.
Police Say She Feared Exposure of Second Affair
Police sources said the marriage had been strained for the past three years, with frequent fights between the couple. During this time, Chaitra allegedly entered into a relationship with a man named Puneeth. When Gajendra discovered the affair, he informed her parents, and the family tried to mediate the situation.

However, Chaitra then started another relationship with Shivu, a resident of Belur, who later assisted her in executing the poisoning plot. Police believe she feared her husband would discover this second affair as well and decided to eliminate the entire family.
Police have arrested Chaitra and launched a full investigation into the case. The incident has drawn comparisons to the notorious “cyanide killer” case from Kerala involving Jolly Joseph, who poisoned six members of her family over 14 years.
