The Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Dubai honored the victims of the Moscow attack at Crocus City Hall by illuminating in the colors of the Russian flag, according to Russian news agency TASS.
On its facade, the inscription “the United Arab Emirates supports Russia” was displayed in Arabic and English, symbolizing solidarity.
According to officials, Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and the western region of Lviv faced Russian air attacks early Sunday, with Polish forces on heightened alert.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to stay in shelters, stating, “Explosions in the capital. Air defense is working. Do not leave shelters,” in a Telegram post. Lviv regional governor Maksym Kozytskyi reported that the Stryi district, south of Lviv near the Polish border, was also targeted in the attacks.
The event, coordinated by Dubai authorities and Emaar, lasted for several minutes. Additionally, other prominent buildings such as Khalifa University, ADNOC, ADNEC, and others joined in by lighting up in the colors of the Russian flag, as reported by WAM news agency.
The recent Moscow attack, potentially linked to the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), underscores the alarming resurgence of this group. This comes in the wake of their previous attacks, including the tragic suicide bombing at Kabul airport in August 2021 during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. While the focus may have shifted to Russia, it’s crucial to remember ISKP’s past targeting of US forces.
The similarities between this attack and previous IS atrocities, like the Bataclan massacre in Paris and the Manchester Arena bombing, are chilling reminders of the group’s global reach and ruthless tactics. Recent intelligence leaks also reveal ISKP’s intentions to carry out attacks in various regions, including during events like the World Cup in Qatar.
Regardless of the geopolitical context, the threat posed by ISKP demands heightened vigilance from counter-terror authorities worldwide.
