The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is gearing up to search for a new head coach for Team India as the contract of Rahul Dravid, which expires in June, will not be automatically extended. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah confirmed that an advertisement for the position will be released soon, signalling a fresh recruitment process.
Rahul Dravid took on the role of head coach in November 2021 and had his contract extended post the 2023 ODI World Cup, which was set to conclude by June 2024. However, with the upcoming T20 World Cup on the horizon, the BCCI is initiating a search for Dravid’s successor.
“Rahul’s tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so,” stated Jay Shah, emphasizing that Dravid will need to reapply if he wishes to continue in the role.
Shah also hinted at the possibility of appointing a foreign coach in place of Rahul Dravid, indicating that the decision will be made by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), highlighting that the BCCI is open to global talent.

Regarding the prospect of having different coaches for different formats, Jay Shah dismissed the idea, citing the prevalence of all-format players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant in the team, and noting that such a scenario has no precedent in Indian cricket.
Responding to criticism surrounding the Impact Player rule in the IPL, Jay Shah emphasized that the rule was a test case aimed at providing opportunities for new Indian talent. He stressed that feedback from stakeholders, including franchises and broadcasters, will be crucial in deciding the rule’s continuation.
“We will discuss with the stakeholders – franchises and broadcasters – before deciding on the continuation of the Impact Player. It’s not permanent, but no one has provided feedback against the rule,” Shah explained.
As the BCCI embarks on the search for Team India’s new head coach, the cricketing community awaits to see who will take on this crucial role ahead of India’s upcoming campaigns.
