In a recent development, the foreign ministry of Russia has accused the United States of aiming to destabilize India during its upcoming general election in 2024. The accusation follows a report by a US federal commission that criticized New Delhi for alleged violations of religious freedom.
According to a report by RT news, a Russian government-owned news network, foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Washington’s criticisms lack understanding of India’s national mentality and history. Zakharova condemned the “unfounded accusations” made by the US regarding religious freedoms in India, calling it disrespectful to the country and its state. She emphasized that the motive behind these accusations is to disrupt India’s internal political situation and complicate the forthcoming general elections.

The annual report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) criticized India for alleged violations of religious freedom, renewing its recommendation to designate India as a “Country of Particular Concern.” The report particularly targeted the ruling BJP for its enforcement of what it deemed “discriminatory” nationalist policies, including laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, among others.
The Ministry of External Affairs of India swiftly responded, slamming the USCIRF for attempting to interfere in India’s electoral process and propagating biased narratives against the country. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal criticized the USCIRF for its lack of understanding of India’s diverse and pluralistic democracy, dismissing its efforts as futile.
Moreover, Moscow dismissed allegations linking an Indian official to a foiled plot to assassinate Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. Zakharova rejected claims made by The Washington Post, stating that Washington had not provided any reliable evidence of Indian involvement in the alleged plot. The Indian External Affairs Ministry also rejected The Washington Post report, labeling it as “unwarranted and unsubstantiated.”
In light of these developments, tensions between the United States, Russia, and India have escalated, with each nation defending its stance amidst accusations and counter-accusations. The situation underscores the complexities of international relations and the delicate balance of power in the global arena. As India prepares for its upcoming general election, the accusations and criticisms from various quarters may influence the political landscape, both domestically and internationally.
