In a groundbreaking victory, Democrat Zohran Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral elections, becoming both the city’s first Muslim mayor and the youngest ever to hold the office.
The 33-year-old defeated former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who contested as an Independent candidate. Mamdani will succeed outgoing mayor Eric Adams, who had withdrawn from the race in September.

Mamdani’s campaign, marked by its grassroots energy and social media reach, resonated deeply with New Yorkers frustrated by rising living costs and housing inequality.
His victory speech, delivered to a jubilant crowd, reflected his progressive vision and inclusive politics.
Key Highlights from Zohran Mamdani’s Victory Speech
“I will fight for all New Yorkers,” Mamdani declared. “Whether you are an immigrant, a member of the trans community, a single mom waiting for grocery prices to fall, or anyone with their back against the wall.”

He also invoked Jawaharlal Nehru’s historic ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech, saying: “A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new… when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.”
Following his speech, the ‘Dhoom’ song played as Mamdani celebrated with his wife, Rama Duwaji, and his parents — filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani — joining him on stage.
Mamdani spoke passionately about identity and conviction: “I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a Democratic Socialist. And most damning of all, I refuse to apologise for any of this.”
He also sent a message to US President Donald Trump, who had endorsed Cuomo and warned of funding cuts if Mamdani won. “Donald Trump, I know you’re watching, so I have four words for you — turn the volume up.”

‘New York Chose Hope Over Fear’
As he closed his speech, Mamdani struck an emotional chord: “Each morning, I will rise with one purpose — to make this city better than it was yesterday. Many thought politics had become too cruel for hope to survive. But tonight, New York has proven them wrong.”
He thanked his campaign team, family, and supporters: “New York City — breathe this moment in. After years of holding our breath, we can finally exhale and feel the rebirth of our city.”
