In a tragic turn of events during the Midtown Manhattan office building shooting on Monday, New York Police Department (NYPD) officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old immigrant from Bangladesh, was among the four people killed. Islam’s bravery and sacrifice have since captured the city’s collective heart.
Islam, who had been with the NYPD for three and a half years, was shot by 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, a gunman with a documented mental health history, inside the 345 Park Avenue skyscraper.
Islam died while attempting to protect civilians during the violent standoff. Local reports indicate his wife is eight months pregnant with their third child, and he is survived by her and their two young sons.
Mayor Eric Adams, NYPD Pay Emotional Tribute
New York Mayor Eric Adams paid heartfelt tribute to the fallen officer, stating, “He loved this city and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person that believed in God… He was a true-blue New Yorker not only in the uniform he wore, but in his spirit and energy of loving his city.”

Shooter Identified, Motive Still Under Investigation
The gunman, Shane Tamura, carried an AR-style rifle into the Midtown skyscraper just blocks from Rockefeller Centre and the Museum of Modern Art. The confrontation began around 6:40 PM, with Tamura first exchanging fire in the building’s lobby before moving to the 32nd or 33rd floor.
According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Tamura had a “documented mental health history,” and investigations into his motive are still ongoing.
Besides Islam, two women and one man were also killed. Their names have been withheld until their families are notified. One other man sustained critical injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
