Israel-Hamas war: Israeli negotiators are expected to travel to Qatar on Sunday for renewed efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, as Hamas has dropped key demands following recent setbacks.
Over the past few days, the militant group has experienced frustration due to the lack of response to its appeals for widespread protests during Ramadan, frustration stemming from the Palestinian Authority’s unilateral appointment of a new prime minister without consultation, and concern over the potential loss of a significant military leader in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.
Israeli representatives are anticipated to travel to Qatar on Sunday as part of renewed and intensified endeavors to achieve a temporary cessation of hostilities in Gaza. This move comes after Hamas relinquished certain crucial ceasefire conditions last week, prompted by a string of setbacks.

In response to these developments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has authorized plans for a military offensive in Rafah, the last major stronghold of Hamas in Gaza, where over 1 million displaced Palestinians have sought refuge. The move comes despite warnings of potential civilian casualties.
Egypt aims to broker a ceasefire in Gaza, increase aid shipments to the region, and facilitate the relocation of displaced Palestinians from the southern and central areas to the north, as stated by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Friday. The conflict began with a Hamas-led assault on southern Israeli towns on October 7, resulting in the death of 1,200 individuals and the capture of 253, according to Israeli sources.
Since then, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, comprising airstrikes, naval attacks, and ground operations, has resulted in the deaths of over 31,000 people and injuries to more than 71,500, according to Gaza health officials. The conflict has spilled over into other volatile regions in the Middle East, with Lebanon’s Hezbollah, backed by Iran, engaging in frequent skirmishes with Israel along the border.
Additionally, pro-Iranian armed factions in Iraq have targeted U.S. troops, while Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis have launched attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and its vicinity to express solidarity with Palestinians affected by the Gaza conflict.
