In a decisive move to safeguard public health, the West Bengal government has extended its ban on the manufacture, storage, sale, and distribution of gutkha and pan masala products containing tobacco or nicotine for another year.
This extended prohibition takes effect on November 7, 2024. The announcement, made by the state’s Health Department on October 24, underscores a commitment to reducing health risks associated with these products.
State’s Notice on Public Health Concerns
The notice from the Health Department emphasized that the ban was issued by the Commissioner of Food Safety, who holds authority under Section 30 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The Act allows the Commissioner to restrict food items deemed harmful to public health within the state. In alignment with the 2011 Food Safety and Standards Regulations, West Bengal’s decision reflects ongoing efforts to limit the distribution and consumption of potentially dangerous substances.
