In a move both unconventional and contentious, a government primary school in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district made waves across social media as it transformed a classroom into a makeshift swimming pool.
A viral video on X showed students, clad in their school uniforms, frolicking in ankle-deep water, sparking a cascade of divided opinions.
The X user who shared the video shed light on the school’s motive behind this unorthodox measure of transforming classrooms to swimming pool. According to the post, the school administration resorted to this peculiar solution to combat declining attendance, a predicament exacerbated by the concurrent challenges of crop harvesting and scorching heatwaves.
“In UP’s Kannauj, a classroom at a government primary school was turned into a swimming pool for students. As per school authorities, this was done to maintain attendance of students who were missing school due to crop harvest and heatwave,” the caption of the video read.

With over 28,000 views, the video incited a spectrum of reactions from netizens. While some lauded the ingenuity of the school officials, viewing it as a proactive approach to engage students, others derided the initiative as ludicrous. One user said, “These angels need a swimming pool. Look how happy they are,” echoing sentiments of approval. Another advocated for integrating swimming as a mandatory component of the school curriculum, citing it as a commendable initiative.
Conversely, dissenting voices emerged, branding the endeavor as a mockery of education. “Education has been turned into a joke,” lamented one user, expressing concern over the implications of allowing children to frolic in what they deemed unsanitary conditions. Another user articulated apprehensions regarding the potential health hazards posed by exposure to contaminated water, questioning the accountability for any resultant infections.
This episode isn’t the first time a school in Uttar Pradesh has courted controversy. Earlier in January, another institution faced criticism for permitting students to perform a Bollywood dance routine on Republic Day, sparking debates regarding the propriety of such activities within an educational context.
