In a shocking turn of events, Poornima Ramarao, the mother of 26-year-old OpenAI whistleblower Suchir Balaji, has alleged foul play in her son’s death. Balaji, who was found dead in his San Francisco apartment last month, had recently left OpenAI and spoken out against the company’s data-gathering practices and alleged copyright violations in the development of ChatGPT. The medical examiner had ruled his death a suicide.
In an interview to India Today, Poornima revealed that she used ChatGPT to analyze blood stains found in her son’s apartment, which, according to her, contradicted the police’s version of events.
“There were signs of a fight in the bathroom, and when we fed the picture to ChatGPT, we found that the splatter of blood is not like what it is supposed to be as per the cause of death,” she stated. Poornima also pointed out separate blood spots in the bathroom that suggested her son may have been hit. Additionally, no suicide note was found at the scene.
Concerned by these findings, Poornima hired a private investigator, who concluded that the case did not appear to be a suicide. She criticized the investigation process, stating, “When death by suicide is determined, so many factors are taken into account. The major factor is whether the person is depressed. They didn’t even ask us.”
Discrepancies in the Investigation
The grieving mother further alleged discrepancies in the handling of the case. According to her, the attorney told them that CCTV footage from the apartment building showed no one entering or leaving on November 26, the day of her son’s death.

However, Poornima highlighted that two entrances—one through the garage and another through the backdoor—lacked CCTV coverage. “The police are not listening to us,” she lamented.
Elon Musk’s Support
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has also backed Poornima’s claims, amplifying her concerns in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Musk’s support has added momentum to the calls for a thorough investigation into Balaji’s death.
Poornima has appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for intervention, citing the powerful tech industry lobby in San Francisco. She alleged corruption in the system and said, “My son wanted to make a difference to mankind. He was working on a project called ‘Futura Doctor Visit.’ Our dreams have been snatched away from us.”
As the investigation continues, calls for transparency and accountability grow louder. Poornima’s relentless pursuit of justice for her son highlights the need for a comprehensive probe into the circumstances surrounding Suchir Balaji’s untimely death.
