Suchir Balaji, a 26 year old AI researcher, was found dead at a Buchanan Street apartment, San Francisco, on November 26, according to a CNBC report. The police and the office of the Chief medical examiner suspect he died by suicide.

Concerns raised by Suchir Balaji
Balaji on his personal website showed concerns on copyright materials on OpenAI which, according to him, had majorly gone through copyright infringement cases. The training models of his company were not able to produce authentic copy and copyrighting could lead to serious violation of laws if not protected by “fair use”.

Balaji pointed out, “This is not a sustainable model for the internet ecosystem as a whole” whiling speaking to the New York Times. In his post, he had explained why he is criticizing OpenAI.

While OpenAI highlighted that they use public sources to train their AI models which is protected by fair use, they added, “We view this principle as fair to the creators, necessary for innovators and critical for US competitors.” They also expressed condolences on the death of Suchir Balaji.

Suchir Balaji was a former OpenAI researcher in San Francisco. He had spent nearly four years in the company. Suchir’s job profile was to collect data for the formation of company’s flagship product, ChatGPT.
After its launch in 2022, the techie questioned the legal aspects for the function of the AI. Quitting his job in 2023, he alleged OpenAI of publishing copyright contents from the internet without authorization which he stated would turn dangerous for mankind.
