On Thursday and subsequently on Friday, 24 people were arrested after a mob vandalised the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata during a protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the institution last week. The RG Kar hospital vandalism occurred amidst a vigil titled ‘Women, Reclaim the Night,’ organized by women in Kolkata and other parts of the country on Wednesday night.
The vigil, which began around 11 PM, turned violent when some individuals entered the hospital premises, causing extensive damage to vehicles and public property. The police had to use lathicharge and teargas to bring the situation under control, with 15 policemen reportedly injured during the clash.

While the identities of the arrested individuals have not been officially disclosed, Dr. Anubhav Mondal, one of the protesters outside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, stated that he recognized himself among those circled in the photographs shared by the police.
The NDTV reported that Dr Mondal expressed determination to continue the protests, emphasizing that they seek justice at any cost and are demanding a neutral investigation monitored by the court.
Amidst rumours circulating on social media that the seminar hall, where the trainee doctor was raped and murdered, had also been vandalized, Kolkata Police issued a statement denying these claims. They warned against spreading false information and reassured that the crime scene was not compromised.
The situation remains tense as protests continue, with calls for justice and accountability growing louder in the wake of this tragic incident.
