The Kolkata Police have confirmed that the crime scene at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a 31-year-old doctor was raped and murdered last week, remains uncompromised despite last night’s mob violence.
Addressing reports that the fourth-floor room where the crime occurred had been vandalised, the police clarified in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “Crime scene is Seminar Room and it has not been touched. Don’t spread unverified news. We will initiate legal action for spreading rumours.”

The post emphasized that the seminar room, which is the actual crime scene, is intact and has not been tampered with. This statement came after a night of chaos when a mob stormed the medical college campus, damaging vehicles and public property. Police had to deploy teargas to disperse the mob, and several officers were injured in the process.
While the identity of those responsible for the violence remains unclear, Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition from the BJP, accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of sending “goons” from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to disrupt an apolitical protest rally near the hospital.

He alleged that these individuals, posing as protesters, were allowed by the police to enter the hospital premises and potentially tamper with evidence crucial to the ongoing investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In response to the vandalism, Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress general secretary, condemned the violence at RG Kar, stating that it “exceeded all acceptable limits.”
He contacted the Commissioner of Police, urging immediate action to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the unrest, regardless of their political affiliations. He also expressed support for the protesting doctors, affirming that their demands for safety and security are justified and should be prioritized by the government.

The CBI is now leading the investigation into the rape and murder case, following the Calcutta High Court’s decision to transfer the case due to the lack of significant progress by Kolkata Police. The victim’s parents had petitioned for a court-monitored probe to ensure that the evidence remains untampered.
