A fresh twist has emerged in the gold smuggling case involving Kannada actor Ranya Rao, as a protocol officer claimed he assisted her at the airport under the direct instructions of Karnataka DGP Ramachandra Rao, her stepfather.
Basavaraj, a constable stationed at Kempegowda International Airport Police Station, revealed that he was carrying out his duties based on specific orders from the senior police official. He stated that his role was to facilitate the smooth arrivals and departures of Ranya Rao, as per the instructions from his superiors.
Call from Ranya Rao Before Arrest
According to Basavaraj, on the day of Ranya Rao’s arrest, he received a call from her at 6:20 PM, informing him of her arrival from Dubai and requesting protocol assistance. He was present at the airport when she was leaving, just moments before Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials detained her on gold smuggling charges.

DRI Interrogation and Investigation
On March 4, Basavaraj was summoned and interrogated by the DRI in connection with the case. His statement was later included in the remand application submitted to the court. During questioning, Basavaraj denied any involvement in or knowledge of the smuggling operation. He insisted that his interactions with Ranya Rao were strictly professional and limited to protocol duties assigned by his superiors.

Professional Acquaintance with the Actor
The constable admitted to knowing Ranya Rao for several years but maintained that their acquaintance was purely professional. He disclosed that he had assisted her three to four times in the past but could not recall the exact dates and times.
DRI officials conducted a seizure (mahazar) of gold bars at the airport in Basavaraj’s presence. However, he firmly stated that he was unaware of any illegal activities linked to the actor and had no direct connection to the smuggling case.

The case has sparked significant attention due to the alleged involvement of Karnataka’s top cop. As investigations continue, authorities are scrutinizing all individuals linked to Ranya Rao’s airport movements and potential misuse of protocol services.
