The JD(S) on Tuesday suspended MP Prajwal Revanna and issued a show-cause notice in response to the serious sexual abuse allegations made by multiple women against him.
Prajwal Revanna faced legal trouble after a former housekeeper filed complaints against him, leading to his booking in an alleged sexual harassment case on April 28. The charges against him include Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (outraging the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
On Monday, thetheorist.in had reported that Prajwal Revanna is facing a legal case amid a controversy involving explicit videos that purportedly show him in compromising situations with multiple women. The videos appeared on social media shortly after he participated in the Phase 2 elections by casting his vote on April 26.
Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of JDS chief and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, has strongly refuted the accusations and filed a complaint stating that the circulated videos have been tampered with.
In light of the intensifying situation, the Karnataka government has formed a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the issue.
The decision to form the SIT was prompted by a recommendation from the state women’s commission under the Siddaramaiah government, urging swift action.
What is the case against Prajwal Revanna
The scandal involves explicit videos allegedly involving the MP and circulated widely within the Hassan constituency. Subsequently, a woman has come forward and filed a police complaint against Prajwal Revanna, accusing him of sexual assault spanning from 2019 to 2022.
The complainant also alleges that he behaved inappropriately during a video call with her daughter and engaged in lewd conversations. Furthermore, she claims that Prajwal’s father, HD Revanna, also assaulted her in his wife’s absence, expressing concerns about her safety and her family’s well-being.
The situation has sparked a political controversy between the JDS and the BJP. BJP leader Devaraje Gowda has accused the HD Deve Gowda family, including Prajwal Revanna, of serious misconduct, referencing a pen drive containing explicit videos allegedly used for coercion.
Prajwal Revanna, the NDA candidate in the Hassan Lok Sabha constituency, left for Germany shortly after the videos surfaced online. He maintains that the videos have been manipulated to tarnish his reputation and influence voters against him.
