China’s Ministry of Public Security announced the deportation of more than 800 Chinese nationals from Myanmar’s border with Thailand due to involvement in online fraud activities.
The group was deported from the notorious gambling and scam hub, Shwe Kokko, located in Myanmar’s Kayin state through Thailand on Wednesday, according to a statement released by the ministry.
Scam centers in border regions of Thailand, Myanmar, and China have become a significant issue, with individuals from these countries falling victim to online fraud schemes and subsequently being ensnared in criminal activities.
In 2023, tens of thousands of Chinese nationals were deported from Myanmar for their roles in various criminal activities, including forced labor, human trafficking, and money laundering, which escalated following the closure of casinos across Southeast Asia due to COVID-19.
Since March 2023, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security has been collaborating with authorities in Myanmar and Thailand to combat transnational communication network fraud and online gambling operations. The 800 individuals deported were allegedly linked to an online money laundering syndicate.
While the specifics of the repatriation process could not be independently confirmed, it is stated that the arrests resulted from ongoing trilateral cooperation between China, Myanmar, and Thailand.
According to media affiliated with Myanmar’s junta, a total of 52,820 foreigners, including 50,772 Chinese nationals, were repatriated from October 5, 2023, to March 6, 2024.
