In a surprising turn of events following the Lok Sabha election results on Tuesday, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has emerged as a key player amidst a weak mandate for the governing National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Known for his history of switching allegiances, Nitish Kumar joined the NDA just five months ago and has since played a pivotal role in setting up the INDIA alliance with opposition leaders like Mamata Banerjee and Rahul Gandhi before abruptly leaving the group.
As of now, Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) party is leading in six seats and has won six others in Bihar, the state where he currently serves as the chief minister. Reports have surfaced suggesting that the INDIA bloc has begun reaching out to Nitish Kumar, offering him the position of deputy prime minister if he chooses to defect from the NDA.
In a move that could have significant implications on the stability of the Indian government, senior INDIA bloc leader Sharad Pawar reportedly spoke to Nitish Kumar about the election results. However, Sharad Pawar later denied the reports.

With the NDA teetering at around 290-295 seats, just shy of the majority mark of 272, Kumar’s decision could make or break the alliance’s chances of forming a government. Should he decide to switch sides, it could jeopardise Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s chances of securing a third term in office.
In addition to Nitish Kumar, another potential threat to the NDA’s stability comes from Chandrababu Naidu, whose Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is expected to win 16 seats. Naidu, who rejoined the NDA recently, has a history of alliances with the Congress party, making him another key player in the post-election scenario.

As speculation mounts about the future leadership of the government, all eyes are on Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu as their decisions could potentially reshape the political landscape of India. As the NDA’s fate hangs in the balance, the possibility of a new leadership emerging after a decade of Modi’s rule looms large.
