West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday called for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on moral grounds, citing the BJP’s underwhelming performance in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Despite aiming for a 400-seat target, the BJP fell short, prompting Banerjee’s demand.
“I am happy that the Prime Minister did not get the majority figure. The Prime Minister has lost credibility. He should resign immediately because he had said that this time they would cross 400 seats,” Mamata Banerjee said in a press conference in Kolkata.
Mamata Banerjee criticised Modi and BJP leader Amit Shah, highlighting their failure despite significant efforts and expenditures. “Even after causing so many atrocities, spending so much money, this arrogance of Modi ji and Amit Shah, the INDIA bloc has won and Modi has lost. They have even lost in Ayodhya,” she asserted.
The Trinamool Congress leader’s remarks reflect growing dissent against the BJP’s leadership following an election where opposition coalitions made significant inroads.

In a surprising development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trailing in two critical Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, sparking debate over the electoral impact of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir issue.
Arun Govil, the actor-turned-politician running from Meerut, is behind by more than 19,000 votes. In Faizabad, where the significant Ayodhya Ram Mandir is located, the BJP is trailing by over 45,000 votes. Losing Faizabad is particularly notable for the BJP, given its symbolic importance due to the presence of the Ram Mandir.
The Ayodhya Ram Mandir, constructed following the 1992 demolition of the Babri Masjid, has been a highly contentious topic in Indian politics. The BJP heavily emphasized its role in the temple’s construction and the consecration ceremony held in January 2024. The party used this event to criticize the opposition INDIA bloc for their absence at the ceremony.
These unexpected electoral setbacks in key constituencies raise questions about the efficacy of the BJP’s strategy and the resonance of the Ram Mandir issue with voters.
