A woman from Nepal, visiting Assam, has alleged harassment by a group of seven individuals, including a woman, in a disturbing incident recounted via a video posted on her Instagram account.
The woman, whose age remains undisclosed, claimed that she was targeted by the group in Assam due to her attire, which apparently resembled that of a boy.
According to her account, the incident occurred on the evening of April 1 while she was in Mariani, in Assam’s Jorhat. In the video, she asserted that she was forcibly removed from a cab by some of the accused, one of whom she identified as Bobby Choudhary, a reporter. Shockingly, she claimed that one woman in the group suggested tearing her shirt to ascertain her gender.
Despite seeking recourse with the police to register a complaint, the woman alleged facing further distress as authorities reportedly mocked her and directed her to pursue legal action.
In the video, she is heard saying, “Also the whole police station was mocking my dress and the accused had good connections with the police and none were taking our side. The accused were given all the hospitality needed whereas the victim had to wait for the accused for three hours and yet no justice was given. I was harassed to such an extent that I was being forced to show that I am a female in front of everyone to prove to them that I’m a girl.”
“They snatched my shirt where half of my chest was visible. They threw racial slurs at me and even assaulted me physically. The insult went on to such an extent that I even contemplated suicide later that night,” she said.
In her harrowing narration, the Nepali tourist detailed the verbal and physical harassment she endured for simply having short hair and walking in the neighbourhood at night.
She lamented the lack of support from Assam law enforcement, alleging favouritism toward the accused due to their purported connections.
The woman’s distressing account, including being subjected to racial slurs and physical assault in Assam, culminated in feelings of despair, prompting thoughts of suicide. Expressing a plea for justice, she appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi for assistance in seeking redress.
Responding to the outcry, the Assam Police acknowledged the case, stating that a complaint had been lodged. The police confirmed that they are in touch with the complainant through the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of the Titabor town. The police reiterated their commitment to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate action in accordance with the law.
