Ukraine has launched a significant air assault against Russia, firing more than 40 drones into the bordering Rostov region in what appears to be one of its most substantial attacks of the war. The assault, targeting Russian soil, marks an escalation in Kyiv’s offensive against its neighbor.
According to Moscow defense officials, the attack saw a total of 44 drones intercepted and destroyed in the Morozovsky district, over 100 kilometers (60 miles) from the border. The strike resulted in damage to a power substation, as confirmed by Rostov Governor Vasily Golubev. While reports indicate the presence of a military airfield near Morozovsk, it remains unclear whether this was the intended target of the attack.
In addition to the drones intercepted in the Rostov region, the Russian Defense Ministry reported the interception of nine more drones over various border regions, including Kursk, Belgorod, Krasnodar, and the nearby Saratov region.
Ukrainian authorities have refrained from commenting on the strikes, maintaining silence in response to such incidents.
Drone warfare has emerged as a significant aspect of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, now entering its third year since Russia’s full-scale invasion. Along the extensive front line, where conventional fighting has stagnated, both sides leverage low-cost drones to neutralize expensive military assets.
The Kremlin’s forces have notably employed Iranian-designed Shahed drones to target urban areas within Ukraine. Conversely, Kyiv has demonstrated its own drone capabilities, leveraging its burgeoning defense industry to deploy drones, including unmanned sea vessels, with lethal effectiveness.
Russian authorities have long accused Ukraine of conducting regular drone attacks on critical infrastructure, including power plants and oil refineries, in western regions of Russia near the border. Last month, Ukraine reportedly launched a barrage of 35 drones targeting such sites, as acknowledged by Russia.
Despite Ukraine’s tactical successes, it faces a significant disparity in military capabilities compared to Russia. In a recent display of firepower, Moscow unleashed a mass barrage of 99 drones and missiles targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure across the country, underscoring the ongoing intensity of the conflict.
