Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya faced a disappointing end to the IPL 2024 season as his team lost their final league game to the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday, May 17. Adding to his troubles, Pandya was fined Rs 30 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate in the first innings and has been suspended from MI’s opening match of the next IPL season, in 2025.
The penalty was imposed after MI was found guilty of a slow over rate for the third time this season. Consequently, Hardik Pandya received a one-match ban, similar to the punishment handed to Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Rishabh Pant earlier in the season. With MI’s campaign concluding on Friday, Pandya’s suspension will be enforced during the team’s first game of the next season.
A media release stated, “Hardik Pandya, the Mumbai Indians captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their IPL 2024 match against Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on May 17. As it was his team’s third offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Pandya was fined Rs 30 lakh and banned from playing the team’s next match.”
In addition to the fine imposed on Hardik Pandya, all other team members, including star opener Rohit Sharma, have been fined 50 percent of their respective match fees or Rs 12 lakh, whichever is lower. Although it is common practice for team management to cover these fines, the players themselves rarely incur financial losses.
Pandya’s struggles this season reflect broader issues within the Mumbai Indians camp, as they failed to secure a playoff spot. His fine and suspension add a further challenge for the team as they look ahead to the next season.
