Congress’s Lok Sabha candidate from North East Delhi, Kanhaiya Kumar, was attacked on Friday during an election campaign in his constituency. The incident occurred when a group of individuals approached him under the pretext of garlanding him, only to assault him.
The attackers also targeted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) woman councillor Chhaya Gaurav Sharma. Following the incident, Sharma filed a police complaint, alleging that her shawl was snatched away and her husband was taken aside and threatened.
According to the complaint, black ink was thrown at the crowd, resulting in injuries to several people, including three to four women.
Kanhaiya Kumar, representing the INDIA bloc, is contesting against BJP’s Manoj Tiwari in North East Delhi.
Kanhaiya Kumar, a prominent political figure and activist in India, is the Congress Party’s Lok Sabha candidate from North East Delhi. He gained national recognition as the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) and became a vocal critic of the ruling establishment, advocating for issues such as social justice, secularism, and freedom of expression.
Born in Bihar’s Begusarai district, the early life of Kanhaiya Kumar and education were rooted in a politically active environment, which shaped his ideological leanings. He holds a PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University, where he emerged as a significant voice against various government policies. His arrest in 2016 on charges of sedition, following a campus event, thrust him into the national spotlight, igniting debates on nationalism and dissent.
The political journey of Kanhaiya Kumar took a significant turn when he joined the Communist Party of India (CPI) and contested the 2019 general elections from Begusarai, although unsuccessfully. In 2021, he switched to the Indian National Congress, signalling his intent to broaden his political base and influence.
As a candidate in the 2024 elections, Kanhaiya Kumar represents the INDIA bloc, an alliance of opposition parties. His campaign focuses on addressing local issues in North East Delhi, such as unemployment, communal harmony, and infrastructural development, challenging BJP’s Manoj Tiwari. Known for his oratory skills and grassroots connect, Kanhaiya Kumar continues to be a polarizing yet influential figure in Indian politics.
