The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah recently conducted a drone attack on a military post in northern Israel, injuring three soldiers, one seriously, according to the Israeli military. This marks the first successful missile airstrike launched by Hezbollah from within Israeli airspace, amidst increased hostilities between the group and Israel over the past seven months.
Hezbollah has intensified its attacks, introducing advanced weaponry and targeting deeper inside Israel, especially following the Israeli incursion into Rafah in the Gaza Strip. Analysts suggest these attacks are messages indicating Hezbollah’s capabilities and willingness to escalate if necessary.
The recent attack involved a drone carrying missiles, occurring just days after Hezbollah launched anti-tank missiles at an Israeli military post controlling a surveillance balloon, which was subsequently shot down. Another attack using explosive drones targeted a base near Tiberias, though it caused no injuries.
Hezbollah’s recent escalations are part of a broader pattern involving the Iran-led axis of resistance, including groups like Hamas and Houthi rebels. This coalition has threatened increased aggression if Israel pursues a full-scale invasion of Rafah.
The conflict has resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with Hezbollah losing over 250 fighters and Israel losing 15 troops since the conflict began on October 7. Hezbollah has adapted its tactics to minimise its own losses, utilising drones and heavy rockets from safer distances.
Hezbollah’s actions and statements, including those from its leader Hassan Nasrallah, indicate their intent to maintain pressure on Israel until its military operations in Gaza cease. Despite diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire, violence continues to displace thousands in the region.
Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has vowed to continue operations against both Hamas and Hezbollah to ensure security. Meanwhile, foreign officials, including Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, are advocating for a ceasefire to allow displaced populations to return home.
