Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has given the green light for the introduction of pod taxis, aiming to enhance connectivity to Mumbai’s bustling business hub, Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). The estimated cost for this transformative project on the BKC-Kurla route is set at Rs 1,016 crore.
Covering a distance of 8.8 kilometres, the pod taxi system is projected to operate at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour, featuring 38 halts and accommodating six passengers per pod. The Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office stated that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has officially approved the pod taxi project, emphasizing its potential to ease the daily commute for millions traveling between the Bandra and Kurla railway stations and BKC.
The Advanced Rapid Transit System, to be implemented through a public-private partnership, is expected to take three years for construction following necessary permissions. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s approval marks the initiation of the tendering process for the pod taxi service. MMRDA officials anticipate a substantial impact on connectivity, estimating 1.09 lakh daily passengers on the pod taxis by 2032.

The MMRDA, overseeing regional planning in Mumbai and its environs, envisions the pod taxi system as a solution to enhance transportation efficiency and alleviate congestion. With an estimated travel cost of Rs 21 per kilometer, the project offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative for commuters.
The success of pod taxis extends beyond Mumbai, with the Uttar Pradesh administration approving a similar project in Noida last year. Inspired by models from London and Abu Dhabi, the Noida pod taxi system aims to connect the City to Jewar Airport, accommodating up to 12 passengers per pod taxi and slated to be operational by March 2026.
