Seeing a significant drop in air quality, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched Stage IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to tackle the growing pollution issue in Mumbai. As the Air Quality Index (AQI) goes above 200 in different areas of the city, marking it as “poor,” these steps are designed to reduce health risks and limit pollution sources during this urgent time.
Suspension of Construction Activities
Seeing that construction contributes heavily to dust pollution, the BMC has decided to stop all construction and demolition work in places where the AQI goes over 200. This move is likely to greatly lower the amount of dust in the air.
To reduce emissions from casual cooking and small businesses, using solid fuels such as wood is no longer allowed. This step aims to address a major source of harmful air pollution.

To help cut down on air pollution in Mumbai, heavy vehicles like trucks are no longer allowed to enter the city. These vehicles contribute a lot to the emissions that harm urban air quality.
A Pause on Polluting Industries
Some industrial sites that are causing a lot of air pollution have been told to stop working for a while. This will help reduce the amount of emissions coming from those areas.
Even with these efforts, making sure the rules are followed remains a big challenge. There are reports of inconsistent compliance in different areas of the city, which makes people question how well these measures are working. The BMC has assigned officials to keep an eye on construction sites to make sure they follow the dust control rules, but there are still gaps in how this is being put into practice.
Current Air Quality Update
The air quality in Mumbai is still considered “poor,” with levels of PM2.5 and PM10 going beyond what is safe. People living in the area should try to stay indoors more, especially when pollution levels are high, and consider using air purifiers at home for better protection.
With the launch of GRAP Stage IV measures, the BMC is showing its dedication to tackling the city’s air pollution problem. However, for these efforts to truly make a difference over time, it’s important that there is consistent enforcement and ongoing work from everyone involved.
