A new set of UK visa rules and regulations has been rolled out under Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s immigration reduction strategy. These changes have raised concerns among Indian migrants as the minimum income requirement to sponsor family members has surged significantly.
Previously set at £18,600, under the new UK visa rules, the minimum income threshold has skyrocketed to £29,000, marking a substantial 55 percent increase. Moreover, projections indicate that this benchmark will further escalate to £38,700 early next year.
This adjustment rings alarm bells for Indian migrants, as nearly half of those who relocated from India to the UK in 2022 earned less than £39,000 annually, according to a report by the migration observatory at the University of Oxford.
Indians constitute a significant portion of non-EU immigration into the UK, with a notable influx for study-related purposes. The surge in visas granted to dependents from India underscores the growing trend of family migration within the Indian community.
Additionally, Indians have consistently ranked among the top beneficiaries of skilled work visas, particularly in the ‘Skilled Worker – Health and Care’ category, witnessing a remarkable 63 percent increase in visa issuance from 13,380 in 2021-22 to 21,837 in 2022-23.
Data from the UK Home Office reveal that Indian nationals accounted for 38 percent of all dependents issued work visas alongside main applicants, followed by Nigerian and Zimbabwean nationals at 17 percent and 9 percent, respectively.
However, the recent alterations in US visa rules for families pose challenges for many Indian workers in meeting the new criteria.
The move to elevate the income threshold for sponsoring family members’ visas, spearheaded by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary James Cleverly, is aimed at reducing legal migration and easing taxpayer burdens, as per the UK Home Office.
Cleverly stressed the imperative of curbing migration levels while acknowledging the intricacies involved in striking a balance acceptable to the British populace.
