Renowned Bengali theatre personality Manoj Mitra, celebrated for his insightful farces and plays often laced with social and political commentary, passed away on Tuesday morning in Kolkata. He was 86 years old. According to family sources, Mitra succumbed to age-related ailments at a hospital, where he had been admitted due to worsening health conditions.

The hospital confirmed that Mitra passed away at approximately 8:50 am on Tuesday. “He was admitted to the hospital on November 3 with multiple health issues, and his condition deteriorated over time. Unfortunately, he left us this morning,” a doctor told the media.

The veteran actor had previously been hospitalized on September 20 due to breathing issues, an imbalance in sodium and potassium levels, and other health complications. Though he was discharged later that month, his health continued to decline.

Manoj Mitra was widely celebrated for his performances and contributions to Bengali theatre. Among his most famous works was Banchharamer Bagan, a film directed by Tapan Sinha and adapted from his own play Sajano Bagaan.
