Former Prime Minister and architect of India’s economic reforms, Dr Manmohan Singh, passed away on Thursday night at the age of 92. The Central government has declared a seven-day national mourning in his honor.
Dr. Singh, who served as the 13th Prime Minister of India for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014, breathed his last at AIIMS, Delhi. According to an official bulletin from AIIMS, he experienced a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26. “Resuscitative measures were started immediately at home. He was brought to medical emergency at AIIMS Delhi at 8.06 pm. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived and was declared dead at 9.51 pm,” the bulletin stated.
As a mark of respect, all government programs scheduled for Friday have been cancelled. The Congress party has also postponed all its events, including its Foundation Day celebrations, for the next seven days. “This is a moment of deep sorrow for the entire nation. The Congress party will observe a seven-day mourning period to honor Dr. Singh’s legacy,” said KC Venugopal, Congress General Secretary.
The Architect of Economic Reforms
Dr. Singh is widely credited for pioneering the economic liberalization reforms of 1991 during his tenure as Finance Minister under then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. These reforms are considered a turning point in India’s economic history, pulling the country out of a severe financial crisis and setting the stage for sustained economic growth.

“Dr. Manmohan Singh’s vision transformed India into a global economic powerhouse. His leadership and policies remain a testament to his foresight and dedication,” said a senior Congress leader.
A Sudden Loss Amid Party Deliberations
Singh’s passing came as the Congress party concluded its Congress Working Committee meeting in Belagavi, Karnataka. Upon receiving the news, senior leaders immediately rushed to Delhi to pay their respects.
The nation is united in mourning the loss of one of its most distinguished statesmen, with tributes pouring in from leaders across the political spectrum. The seven-day mourning will include the lowering of the national flag and a complete halt of celebratory events.
