Kolkata: Following an uproar over his controversial comments aimed at Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, BJP MP Dilip Ghosh on Wednesday launched a counterattack Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek and questioned his statements about Suvendu Adhikari and his family.
In a statement, Ghosh criticised the use of a “woman card,” questioning whether Suvendu Adhikari and his father, former MP and Union Minister Sisir Adhikari, were devoid of respect simply because of their gender. He expressed frustration over the frequent invocation of gender in political discourse.
Ghosh’s remarks came amidst backlash over his previous comments made during the Lok Sabha election campaign, where he questioned Mamata Banerjee’s lineage. His statement, “Decide who your father is,” sparked strong criticism from the Trinamool, which accused Ghosh of displaying “zero respect” for women.
In a clip going viral on social media, Dilip Ghosh can be heard saying, “Didi goes to Goa and says, ‘I am Goa’s daughter’, then goes to Tripura and says, ‘I am Tripura’s daughter’. Decide who your father is. It is not good to be just anybody’s daughter.”
The BJP faced embarrassment over Ghosh’s remarks, providing ammunition to the opposition at a time when the party was attempting to target the Congress over offensive social media posts attributed to its spokesperson Supriya Shrinate.
Reacting to the Trinamool’s condemnation, Dilip Ghosh affirmed he would address the party’s concerns. He clarified that his remarks were aimed at questioning Mamata Banerjee’s political statements rather than personally attacking her. Ghosh acknowledged previous controversies surrounding his language and expressed regret if his words were deemed unparliamentary.
However, Dilip Ghosh turned the spotlight on Abhishek Banerjee, without directly naming him, highlighting derogatory remarks allegedly made by him against Suvendu Adhikari and his father in the past. He questioned the Trinamool’s silence over such remarks and defended his own statements as political in nature.
Ghosh’s response came amidst Trinamool’s decision to field Mahua Moitra as a candidate from Krishnanagar constituency, refraining from designating her as a star campaigner. Dilip Ghosh dismissed Trinamool’s tactics, asserting that the public would ultimately judge the party’s choices.
He further criticized Mahua Moitra’s representation of Krishnanagar, emphasizing the area’s rich cultural heritage and suggesting that her conduct in Parliament, leading to suspensions, might affect voter sentiment.
As the political sparring intensifies, the focus shifts to the electorate’s verdict as Krishnanagar gears up for the upcoming elections, echoing the broader narrative of competitive politics in West Bengal.
