In a development that took many by surprise, Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President of India on Monday, citing health-related concerns. The 74-year-old stepped down shortly after presiding over the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution,” Dhankhar stated in an official letter released by the Vice President’s office.

In his resignation letter, Dhankhar extended his gratitude to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, acknowledging their constant support during his tenure.

“I express my deep gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the esteemed Council of Ministers. Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office,” the letter further added.
Earlier in the day, while chairing proceedings in the Upper House, Dhankhar informed members that he had received a letter signed by over 50 Rajya Sabha MPs requesting the constitution of a committee to consider the removal of Justice Varma. He then directed the Secretary General of the Rajya Sabha to ascertain whether a similar motion had been submitted in the Lok Sabha.
