Bengaluru: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defied the adage that lightning doesn’t strike twice by smashing their way to the highest team total in the history of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). With a staggering 287 for three on the scoreboard, SRH not only surpassed their own record of 277 set earlier in the season against the Mumbai Indians (MI) but also established the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as home to two out of the top three team totals in IPL history.
The ferocious display of batting prowess by SRH showcased their quality from the outset. Despite being put in to bat on a pitch known for producing big scores, SRH showed no mercy to the RCB bowling attack. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head led the charge, with Head reaching his half-century off just 20 balls during the powerplay.
Head’s dominance only intensified as the innings progressed, culminating in a breathtaking century off only 39 deliveries, making it the fourth fastest century in TATA IPL history. His dismissal at 102 runs in the 13th over did little to slow SRH’s momentum, with Heinrich Klaasen stepping up to continue the onslaught.
Klaasen, taking inspiration from Head’s explosive performance, blazed his way to 67 runs off just 31 balls before being dismissed in the 17th over. Abdul Samad added to RCB’s woes with a blistering 37* off only 10 balls, propelling SRH to their record-breaking total in the final over.
In response, RCB began their chase aggressively, reaching 79 in the powerplay with Virat Kohli leading the charge. Kohli’s brisk 42 off 20 balls was complemented by Faf du Plessis’ rapid fifty off just 23 balls. However, despite valiant efforts from Dinesh Karthik, who scored a blazing 83 off 35 balls, RCB fell short, finishing at 262 for seven.
Despite the margin of victory being 25 runs in favor of SRH, RCB’s spirited effort in the face of a daunting target showcased their resilience. The match witnessed a thrilling display of batting prowess, with none of the bowlers able to maintain an economy rate in single figures.
For SRH, this memorable performance further solidifies their reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the IPL, while RCB’s valiant effort serves as a testament to their fighting spirit in the tournament.
