India US defence deal: In a significant boost to India’s defense capabilities, the Indian government has signed a deal with the United States to acquire 31 MQ-9B Predator drones. The agreement, cleared by the Cabinet Committee on Security earlier this month, involves purchasing these drones from General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) through a Foreign Military Sales contract. The total cost of the deal is estimated to be under $3.5 billion.
Allocation of Drones
The acquisition includes different variants of the Predator drones to cater to the specific needs of India’s military services:
– Indian Navy: 15 SeaGuardian drones, specialized for maritime operations.
– Indian Army and Air Force: 16 SkyGuardian drones, with eight allocated to each force for land-based missions.
Key Features of the MQ-9B Predator Drones
The MQ-9B Predator drone is a variant of the MQ-9 ‘Reaper’ drone, known for its high-altitude, long-endurance capabilities. Here are some of its standout features:
– Endurance and Altitude: Can fly for 40 hours continuously at altitudes exceeding 40,000 feet.

– Payload Capacity: It can carry external payloads up to 2,155 kg, including high-precision strike missiles.
– Surveillance and Combat Abilities: Equipped for both land and maritime surveillance, the MQ-9B can engage in anti-submarine, anti-surface warfare, and expeditionary missions. Its advanced electronic warfare capabilities add another layer to its utility.
– Autonomous Operations: The drone is capable of automatic take-offs and landings and can seamlessly integrate into civilian airspace, making it a highly versatile platform.
Strategic Importance of the Deal
This acquisition marks a pivotal moment in strengthening India’s defense partnership with the United States, especially in the context of Indo-Pacific security. Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, emphasized the strategic significance of the deal during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the US last year.
“The US-India Defense Partnership has grown substantially over the past decade. This proposed sale further advances strategic technology cooperation between the two nations, enhancing military collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region,” Miller said.
Ideal for Surveillance and Combat Operations
The Predator drones’ advanced surveillance capabilities, combined with their combat abilities, make them a vital addition to India’s defense arsenal. They are suited for a range of missions, including:
– Land and maritime surveillance
– Anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare
– Electronic warfare and expeditionary missions
The SeaGuardian variant, in particular, is expected to play a key role in maritime domain awareness, especially in protecting India’s vast coastline and exclusive economic zones.
A Growing US-India Defense Partnership
This landmark deal is part of broader defense cooperation between India and the US. It follows other major deals, including the approval for the sale of lightweight torpedoes worth $175 million earlier this year. The growing defense partnership is seen as essential in countering regional threats and bolstering the military strength of both nations in the Indo-Pacific region.
