New Delhi: Days after screenshots of Gemini’s reply to a user calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi “fascist” went viral, Google issued an apology to India, reported The Times Of India.
According to a screenshot shared by a user on social media platform X, Gemini was queried about whether PM Modi is a ‘fascist’, to which the platform responded by stating that he has been “accused of implementing policies some experts have characterized as fascist,” citing factors like the “BJP’s Hindu nationalist ideology, its crackdown on dissent, and its use of violence against religious minorities”.
Quoting Minister of State for IT & Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the report said Google labelled the Gemini chatbot as “unreliable” and expressed regret to Prime Minister Modi.

The controversy arose after the government raised concerns about the “unsubstantiated” results provided by Gemini chatbot in response to queries about PM Modi. Google’s response, according to the minister, was an acknowledgment of the platform’s unreliability. This incident coincided with the government’s announcement of a requirement for AI platforms to obtain permits to operate in India.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar emphasised the need for platforms to respect Indian consumers and highlighted that AI platforms could face legal consequences under Indian IT and criminal laws for disseminating false information.
In response to criticism of historical inaccuracies and biases in generated images, Google discontinued the AI image generation feature in the Gemini chatbot. The platform faced accusations of being “too woke” and “racist.” Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged the issue, admitting that the company had made a mistake.
