In a clear display of heightened military readiness, the Indian Air Force (IAF) will carry out large-scale war games in Rajasthan near the international border with Pakistan, according to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued this evening. The military exercises are scheduled to begin at 9:30 PM on Wednesday and will continue for approximately five-and-a-half hours.
During this time, all flights departing or arriving at airports close to the Indo-Pak border will be suspended, signaling the scale and intensity of the planned operations. The timing and location of the drills have been widely interpreted as a strategic message amid surging tensions with Pakistan, especially following the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22.
Military Posturing Amid Terror Tensions
These drills come as India steps up both civil and military preparedness in response to the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives, mostly civilians. The attackers were identified as members of The Resistance Front, a proxy group backed by the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.
India has accused Pakistan’s deep state of complicity in orchestrating the attack and has taken diplomatic steps in response, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and cancellation of visas for Pakistani nationals.
Amid this volatile backdrop, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has held a series of high-level security meetings. He met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval twice within 48 hours, and has also been in constant dialogue with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the tri-services chiefs.

Last week, PM Modi reportedly granted the Indian armed forces full operational autonomy to determine and execute a suitable response.
Nationwide Civil Defence Drills Signal Wider Preparedness
In a parallel development, nearly 300 ‘civil defence’ drills are being carried out across the country, including in the national capital Delhi and at strategically sensitive locations such as military bases, nuclear plants, refineries, and hydroelectric facilities. These drills mark the first such comprehensive civilian preparedness exercises since the 1971 war with Pakistan.
Civil defence districts, by definition, include geographical areas housing major infrastructure or armed forces installations. In states like Jammu and Uttar Pradesh, these preparations have included air raid sirens, blackout rehearsals, and fire safety exercises, reflecting the seriousness with which India is approaching the current security scenario.
Strategic Implications
The Indian government’s coordinated military and civilian drills underscore a two-pronged approach: readiness for immediate defense and a strategic deterrent aimed at signaling India’s willingness to escalate if provoked. The air force exercises, combined with extensive civil defence planning, represent one of the most robust military postures seen in South Asia in recent years.
