In what may pose a significant challenge to Apple’s manufacturing expansion in India, Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn, a key iPhone assembler, has withdrawn hundreds of its Chinese engineers and technicians from Indian production sites. According to a Bloomberg report, over 300 Chinese workers have already returned to China over the past two months. Most of the remaining foreign staff in India now belong to Taiwan.
While the exact reasons behind the move are unclear, sources cited by Bloomberg believe it aligns with a broader push by the Chinese government to limit the transfer of technology and high-end manufacturing capabilities to India and Southeast Asia. This strategic effort comes amidst geopolitical tension and increasing efforts by global firms to diversify their supply chains away from China.
Impact on Local Workforce and iPhone 17 Production
The sudden pullout of Chinese personnel could delay the training of India’s local workforce and hinder the pace of technology transfer, potentially raising production costs. While one source noted that the move may not directly affect the quality of iPhone production, it is expected to impact efficiency on the factory floor.

Despite the development, India’s government was informed in advance by Foxconn and, as of now, hasn’t observed any significant disruption in production. Neither Apple nor Foxconn offered official comments when approached by the media.
The timing, however, raises concerns as Apple gears up for the production ramp-up of the iPhone 17. Foxconn, while still producing the bulk of iPhones in China, has been expanding its Indian operations over the past few years. India now contributes around 20% of global iPhone output. The recently vacated Chinese roles were crucial to scaling up this capacity, especially as Apple prepares to build another facility in India.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has in the past acknowledged that Chinese workers’ expertise—not just labor cost—was a major factor behind China’s dominance in Apple’s supply chain. The current removal of Chinese engineers from India, therefore, underlines the growing complexity in Apple’s supply chain diversification strategy.
