Maharashtra Bag Check Controversy: The ongoing Maharashtra election campaign took a dramatic turn as prominent leaders, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, publicly underwent baggage checks by election officials.
This came after Uddhav Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, alleged selective targeting by authorities, stating that his bags were checked twice earlier this week in Yavatmal and Latur districts.
The checks, intended to prevent illicit cash flow in the run-up to the November 20 polls, have caused a political stir. Thackeray’s faction argues that ruling alliance members are using money to sway voters in certain regions, while their own leaders face heightened scrutiny. “We welcome impartial checks, but it should apply equally to everyone,” remarked Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut.

Ruling Alliance Responds with Transparency
In response to Thackeray’s allegations, leaders of the ruling alliance allowed their baggage to be checked on camera, sharing footage online to demonstrate compliance. Videos of Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar’s bag searches circulated on social media, and on Tuesday, Eknath Shinde’s bags were similarly inspected in Palghar district. “Everyone should respect the law and support democratic integrity,” said Ajit Pawar.
A spokesperson from the ruling alliance suggested that Thackeray’s complaints were baseless if he has “nothing to hide,” while BJP shared Fadnavis’s video captioned, “Let it be, some leaders just have a habit of creating drama.”
