Jagdeep Dhankar Resignation: The Election Commission of India has officially started preparations for the Vice Presidential election, just two days after the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar from the post. In a press note dated July 23, the Commission confirmed that the poll process to elect the next Vice President of India is now underway, following due notification by the Union Home Ministry.
Though Dhankhar had two years remaining in his five-year term, his successor will still serve a full five-year term, in line with existing rules. “On completion of the preparatory activities, the announcement of the Election Schedule… will follow as soon as possible,” the EC said.
Among the preparatory steps already initiated are the finalisation of the electoral college comprising both elected and nominated members of Parliament and the selection of returning officers who will oversee the poll procedure.
Dhankhar’s Sudden Exit Sparks Speculation
Jagdeep Dhankhar, a former Union minister and West Bengal governor, cited health reasons for stepping down from the second-highest constitutional office in the country. He resigned mere hours after presiding over the opening day of Parliament’s monsoon session.

While Deputy Chairperson Harivansh has assumed his responsibilities in the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar’s departure has triggered a wave of political speculation. His abrupt move, with no prior indication, has drawn scrutiny from Opposition parties, who have questioned both the timing and motive behind the resignation.
At one point during his tenure, Dhankhar faced allegations of bias toward the ruling government, with the Opposition even calling for his impeachment.
The Race to Succeed Dhankhar
Amidst the political buzz, a few names have emerged as potential successors. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is among the frontrunners, though the impending state elections and the push for younger leadership in the state may complicate his prospects.
Two other contenders being widely discussed are Manoj Sinha, the current Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, and VK Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
While the official election schedule is yet to be announced, the Vice Presidential race has already begun to draw considerable attention in Delhi’s political corridors.
