Maharashtra’s political impasse within the Mahayuti alliance has moved toward resolution as BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis is set to return as Chief Minister. Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde, who served as the state’s CM for two years, has reportedly agreed to take on the role of Deputy Chief Minister after intensive negotiations.

This development follows a pivotal meeting between Fadnavis and Shinde on Tuesday at the latter’s residence in Mumbai — the first since tensions over government formation began. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar is also expected to be sworn in alongside the two leaders at the high-profile ceremony scheduled for December 5 at Azad Maidan in Mumbai.

Cabinet Portfolio Allocation

Sources suggest a tentative breakdown of cabinet positions among the three coalition partners:

BJP: Likely to secure 21-22 ministries, including influential portfolios such as Home and Revenue.

Shiv Sena: Expected to receive 12 ministries, including Urban Development. The party is also lobbying for the Legislative Council Chairman position.

NCP: Anticipated to hold 9-10 ministries, including Finance and the Deputy Speaker role.

The final allocation of ministries will be discussed post-swearing-in under Shinde’s leadership, who is recovering from a throat infection and fever.

Political Stability Reassured

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat addressed concerns over discord within the Mahayuti alliance, asserting that “all is well” and confirming the swearing-in ceremony will proceed as planned.

Despite earlier reluctance to step down as Chief Minister, Shinde’s decision signals a significant shift, likely aimed at maintaining alliance unity. The BJP Legislative Party is scheduled to convene on Wednesday to formally elect its leader and announce Fadnavis as the CM candidate.

Ceremony and Next Steps

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior leaders from across the political spectrum are expected to attend the December 5 event. Discussions regarding cabinet portfolios and the coalition’s governance roadmap will follow.

This marks a crucial juncture for Maharashtra’s political landscape as the Mahayuti alliance consolidates its power after securing a decisive victory in the state elections.
