Amid escalating tensions, Bangladesh summoned India’s High Commissioner, Pranay Verma, to Dhaka following the suspension of visa and consular services at its Assistant High Commission in Tripura. This development comes after a security breach during a protest in Agartala over the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s Assistant High Commission in Agartala announced the immediate suspension of all visa and consular services, citing security concerns. On Monday, around 50 protesters entered the commission’s premises, sparking a diplomatic reaction from Dhaka. Acting Foreign Secretary Reaz Hamidullah conveyed the Bangladesh government’s concerns to India’s envoy, emphasizing the “deep sense of insecurity” experienced by the mission’s staff.

Bangladesh criticized local law enforcement for allegedly failing to contain the incident. In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs described the breach as “deeply regrettable” and affirmed its commitment to protecting diplomatic properties. Security at Bangladesh’s missions in India has been intensified.

India Responds to Tensions

High Commissioner Pranay Verma, after his meeting in Dhaka, expressed India’s commitment to maintaining a “positive, stable, and constructive relationship” with Bangladesh. He highlighted the recent strides in bilateral cooperation, including trade, power transmission, and essential commodity supplies, while addressing the importance of resolving current tensions amicably.

“We always want to build on the interdependencies between our nations for mutual benefit,” Verma stated. He reassured that India is ready to work with the interim Bangladeshi government to achieve shared goals for peace and development.

Violence Against Hindus: A Growing Concern

The incident in Agartala comes amid increasing reports of violence and vandalism targeting Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, drawing attention to strained inter-community relations. India has raised concerns about the arrest of Hindu priests and the desecration of temples, urging Dhaka to safeguard the rights and security of minorities.

Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has denied accusations of systemic targeting, dismissing them as “industrial scale misinformation” by Indian media. However, the unrest continues to strain the historically close ties between the two nations.

The diplomatic exchange underscores the urgency of addressing both the security concerns of diplomatic missions and the broader socio-political tensions impacting minority communities in Bangladesh. With both governments reaffirming their commitment to collaboration, a resolution to the immediate crisis may pave the way for sustained dialogue and mutual trust.
