A Delhi Metro commuter caused a stir during morning rush hour after allegedly being spotted drinking alcohol disguised in a soft drink bottle, according to a viral LinkedIn post by a Delhi University professor.
The post, shared by Dr. Kavita, a professor at one of DU’s top colleges, recounted the incident in a crowded Metro coach around 9:20 AM, where she saw a man sipping from a ThumbsUp bottle. However, she claimed the strong smell clearly indicated it wasn’t soda.“The smell made it obvious it wasn’t TumbsUp,” she wrote. “A girl sitting beside him looked uncomfortable. He got off at Chandani Chowk station around 9:20 am.”
Kavita questioned how someone apparently under the influence managed to get past Delhi Metro’s tight security checks.“Maybe this was just a miss. But moments like these do make you think about passenger safety, especially during rush hours,” she added, highlighting her concern for public safety.

Her post has since gone viral and sparked a range of reactions across social media. While many users supported her vigilance and raised concerns about security lapses, others emphasized the need for immediate action rather than social media exposure.“If you see something like this, inform the authorities. Helpline numbers are available in every coach. CISF staff are stationed at most metro stations. Don’t stay silent,” wrote one user.
Another questioned the assumptions made in the post:“Everyone’s assuming it was alcohol. What if it wasn’t? If someone had reported him instead of watching, the matter could’ve been verified and dealt with properly.”
A third user noted how discreetly alcohol can be mixed with cola, making it easy to bypass basic checks:“That’s how some airports ban liquids entirely. But instead of posting online, pressing the alert button, or calling metro security would’ve solved this then and there.”
In a follow-up note, Kavita clarified that her intention was not to vilify the man but to raise awareness.“People must refrain from any activity which is forbidden in public spaces, irrespective of gender,” she said, urging others to remain respectful while discussing the matter.

While the identity of the passenger remains unknown, the conversation sparked by the post continues to highlight the importance of reporting suspicious behavior in real-time, rather than letting it go unnoticed or become a purely digital debate.
