New Delhi: Delhi Transport Minister and AAP leader Kailash Gahlot has been summoned for questioning by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the alleged money laundering case linked to the Delhi liquor policy. According to sources, he has reached the office and is currently being questioned.
This comes on the heels of the recent arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the same case.
The ED alleges that the liquor policy resulted in exorbitant profit margins for retailers and wholesalers, with a significant portion of the latter’s profits being diverted as bribes, totalling over Rs 600 crore. These funds purportedly financed electoral campaigns in Goa and Punjab.
In addition to Gahlot, two other prominent AAP leaders, MP Sanjay Singh and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, have also been arrested in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.
K Kavitha, leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, is also currently in custody in connection with the same case.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has commented on the recent arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in India, expressing its hope for the protection of people’s political and civil rights.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, underscored the significance of ensuring the protection of everyone’s rights, including the right to vote, in India and any other nation undergoing elections.
Responding to apprehensions regarding potential political instability preceding the general elections, Dujarric emphasized the necessity of creating a free and fair environment for voting.
On Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) extended the custody of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for four days until April 1. Kejriwal was detained on corruption charges linked to an alleged liquor policy scam.
Kejriwal’s arrest earlier this month came after the Delhi High Court declined to intervene in the matter.
