In a high-stakes political showdown, the Delhi assembly elections for 70 seats are being held on Wednesday, with the contest poised to reshape the future of the national capital. The election has drawn significant attention from political analysts and the media alike, as incumbent Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faces mounting corruption allegations linked to a now-scrapped liquor policy.
AAP had earlier swept the last two assembly elections but now finds itself in a turbulent political landscape.

Triangular Political Battle: AAP, BJP, and Congress in a High-Stakes Contest
The Delhi election is not merely a contest between political parties; it is a battle of ideologies and promises of reform. On one side, the ruling AAP is grappling with a credibility crisis, while on the other, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leveraging massive rallies led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a well-organised election machinery.

Adding to the intensity is the Congress party, which, after a decade-long period of political sidelining in Delhi, is making a determined comeback. With each party employing distinct campaign strategies, the election is expected to become a defining moment in Delhi’s political history.
Kejriwal’s Governance Crisis and the Liquor Scam Controversy
Arvind Kejriwal’s tenure has been marred by a series of controversies, notably the liquor scam that has now erupted into a full-blown corruption scandal. This issue has not only tarnished the image of his government but has also led to the arrest of several top officials, including his close aide Manish Sisodia.

Kejriwal himself was arrested last March and spent nearly six months in jail, while Sisodia faced 17 months behind bars. These events have severely impacted the narrative of the AAP government, which had previously championed an anti-corruption crusade inspired by the legendary Gandhian activist Anna Hazare.
BJP’s Strategic Campaign and Congress’ Resurgence
Capitalising on the turbulence within the AAP, the BJP is capitalising on the situation with a robust campaign strategy featuring high-profile rallies and endorsements from top national leaders. The BJP’s momentum is supported by an early mobilisation of its extensive election machinery, aiming to present a strong alternative to the incumbent government.

Meanwhile, the Congress party is seizing this opportunity to revive its political fortunes in Delhi after a long hiatus. Their resurgence is being closely watched as it may signal a broader reconfiguration of political power in the region.
Political Implications and the Road Ahead for AAP
The outcome of these elections is pivotal not only for Delhi but also for the national political scene. For AAP, a loss in Delhi could represent a significant setback for the 10-year-old party, undermining its efforts to position itself as a viable competitor to the BJP on a national stage.

Conversely, a victory against these odds would reinforce AAP’s credentials and further its narrative of resilience and reform. The contentious issues, ranging from the misuse of power by the Lieutenant Governor to the implications of an ordinance granting him control over bureaucrats, continue to fuel public debate and shape voter sentiment.
