A developing cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal, soon to be named Cyclone Remal, is forecast to make landfall near Sagar Islands in West Bengal and the adjoining Khepupara region in Bangladesh in the early hours of May 26, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This marks the first cyclone of the pre-monsoon season in the Bay of Bengal.

Meanwhile, as a precursor, it has already began to rain in a few places, including the capital city of Kolkata.

The weather system is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several districts in West Bengal, including South and North 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur, Kolkata, Howrah, and Hooghly, on May 26 and May 27. Northern Odisha will also experience significant rainfall during this period.

Extremely heavy precipitation is anticipated in parts of northeast India on May 27-28. Additionally, heavy rain is likely to affect the districts of Paschim Medinipur, Purba Bardhaman, and Nadia on May 26 and 27.

Currently located over the central Bay of Bengal, approximately 660 km south-southeast of Sagar Island, the depression is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of May 25, the IMD reported. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until May 26 due to the impending storm.

Projected Path of Cyclone Remal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that Cyclone Remal will continue moving northeastward, forming a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24. It is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by May 25 and may escalate to a severe cyclonic storm as it nears the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal by the evening of May 26.

Effects of Cyclone Remal

Authorities have issued warnings for heavy rainfall in several regions. Coastal districts of West Bengal and nearby areas of North Odisha are expected to experience light to moderate rainfall, with isolated areas facing heavy to very heavy rainfall on May 26 and 27. Additionally, Mizoram, Tripura, and South Manipur are also preparing for heavy rainfall during this period.
