Protecting Aurangzeb’s tomb is ‘unfortunate” claimed CM Fadnavis. His remarks came during the inauguration of a temple dedicated to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Thane district.
“It is unfortunate that the government has to take responsibility for the protection of Aurangzeb’s grave, despite his history of persecution,” Fadnavis stated. The tomb, located in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, is currently under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
No Room for Aurangzeb’s ‘Mahima Mandan’
Fadnavis strongly asserted that any efforts to glorify Aurangzeb’s legacy would not be allowed. “I assure you, if any attempt is made to glorify his legacy through ‘mahima mandan’, it will not succeed,” he declared.
His statements align with growing demands for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. BJP’s Satara MP, Udayanraje Bhosale—a direct descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj—has also called for the site’s removal.
Legal Hurdles in Removing Aurangzeb’s Tomb
While acknowledging the sentiment behind these calls, Fadnavis emphasized the legal constraints, explaining that the site is protected under ASI regulations. “We all also want the same thing, but you need to do it within the framework of the law, because it is a protected site. The site was put under ASI’s protection during the Congress regime some years back,” he noted.

Shivaji Maharaj’s Legacy and Religious Freedom
The Maharashtra CM reiterated the significance of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions to India’s religious and cultural freedom. “We are able to worship our gods freely today because of Shivaji Maharaj’s efforts. He fought for Swarajya, for God, for our country, and our religion,” he remarked.
Fadnavis’ comments have reignited debates over historical narratives and their relevance in contemporary politics. As discussions continue, the status of Aurangzeb’s grave remains a contentious issue in Maharashtra’s political landscape.
