The tragic case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has taken a new turn as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) intensifies its probe.
The parents of the victim have provided the CBI with the names of several interns and physicians from the hospital whom they suspect might be involved in the crime. The CBI, acting on an order from the Calcutta High Court, is now focusing on questioning these individuals, as well as officers from the Kolkata Police who were initially involved in the investigation.
The CBI has identified at least 30 suspects and has started interrogating them. Among those summoned for questioning are a house staff member and two post-graduate trainees who were on duty with the victim on the night of the crime.
Additionally, the CBI has taken the former hospital principal, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, for questioning. Dr. Ghosh had resigned shortly after the victim’s body was discovered and has since sought protection due to fears of being attacked.

As part of the investigation, the CBI conducted a crime scene reconstruction using advanced 3D technology, with the arrested suspect, a civic volunteer, participating in the reenactment at the hospital’s seminar hall where the victim’s body was found on August 9.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the opposition parties, CPI(M) and BJP, of using the tragedy to orchestrate vandalism at RG Kar Hospital and distort the facts of the case. She condemned the spread of misinformation on social media and called for the truth to be revealed and the culprits to be punished.

In response, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia criticized the leaders of the INDIA opposition bloc, accusing them of being “political vultures” who only speak out on crimes against women when it suits their political agenda. He emphasized that law and order have collapsed in Bengal and assured that the CBI’s investigation will lead to the harshest punishments for those involved, regardless of any political protection they may have.
Protests by medical students and doctors are ongoing across the country, with demands for a law to ensure the safety of medical professionals in hospitals and workplaces. The medical community, deeply shaken by this incident, is calling for immediate action to prevent such tragedies in the future.
