India is poised to achieve a landmark moment in its transport infrastructure with the country’s first Bullet Train expected to begin operations on August 15, 2027, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Thursday.
The high-speed rail project, officially known as the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, spans 508 kilometres and is designed to drastically cut travel time while introducing global high-speed rail standards to India.
According to Vaishnaw, the Bullet Train corridor will be inaugurated in stages to ensure smooth and safe operations.
The opening sequence will begin with the Surat–Bilimora section, followed by Vapi–Surat. The third phase will connect Vapi to Ahmedabad, after which services will expand from Thane to Ahmedabad. The final phase will complete the full Mumbai–Ahmedabad stretch.
“Buy a Bullet Train ticket on Independence Day in 2027; the country will get its first Bullet Train,” the minister said, underlining the symbolic importance of the launch date.
Cities to Be Connected in the Initial Rollout
Once operational, the corridor will gradually connect major urban centres including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Vapi, Thane and Mumbai, significantly improving inter-city mobility along one of India’s busiest economic belts.
Vaishnaw said the success of the Vande Bharat Express has created “a new sense of confidence across the country” in high-speed train operations.

He added that Indian Railways is also preparing to introduce Vande Bharat Sleeper trains for overnight journeys, offering the same safety, comfort and technological standards. Requests for such services, he noted, are already coming in from MPs across the country.
“With the same comfort, safety and standards, a new overnight journey will begin with the Vande Bharat Sleeper,” Vaishnaw said.
Bullet Train Corridor: Construction Status
As per the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL), the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor includes 352 km in Gujarat and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and 156 km in Maharashtra.
More than 85 per cent of the corridor—around 465 km—is being built on elevated viaducts. So far, 326 km of elevated structures have been completed, along with 17 of the 25 river bridges planned along the route.
The 47-km Surat–Bilimora section is among the most advanced, with civil works and track-bed preparation already completed.
Surat Bullet Train Station Takes Shape
During a visit to Gujarat in November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed progress on the MAHSR project and inspected the Surat Bullet Train station, which draws architectural inspiration from the city’s globally recognised diamond industry.
The station rises to a height of 26.3 metres and covers a built-up area of 58,352 square metres. It has three distinct levels: a ground floor for parking and security checks, a concourse with lounges, kiosks, ticketing and restrooms, and a platform level dedicated to passenger boarding and services.
While structural construction is complete, interior finishing and station amenities are currently underway. Track works, including RC track-bed construction and temporary track installation, have also been completed at the site.
